The 1989 Sea World Holiday Bowl generated $11.4 million for the community, according to a report issued to the city council by bowl officials. The figure was arrived at by a survey conducted by CIC Research, which also found that 21,500 tourists came to San Diego because of the game, won by Penn State, 50-39, over Brigham Young.
BASEBALL
Rick Navarro pitched a three-hitter and struck out nine as San Diego State defeated cross-town rival USD, 3-1, in a nonconference game at SDSU’s Smith Field.
It was the first game Navarro (8-3) has pitched in three weeks. Showing no signs of a hyper-extended left elbow which kept him out of the lineup, Navarro struck out the side in the first and lowered his ERA to 2.48.
Jeff Barry hit his seventh home run for SDSU (38-20) and Dave Pingree hit his second for USD (23-30).
Told it must do well in its last two games to earn one of two berths in the NCAA Division III Western Regional, UC San Diego responded by shutting out Division II Cal State Dominguez Hills, 4-0, at Dominguez Hills.
Mike Morgan (7-2) pitched a five-hitter. Erikk Aldridge went two for three and drove in two runs for UCSD (19-16-2) which plays its final game today when it is host to SDSU at 2:30 p.m. Dominguez Hills fell to 20-21-2.
Geoff Martinez’s bases-loaded single in the bottom of the ninth with none out gave U.S. International a 14-13 victory over UC Irvine in a nonconference game at USIU’s Players’ Field.
WOMEN’S GOLF
Joann Walker of San Diego State is in second place with a three-round total of 220, one stroke behind leader Pat Hurst (219) of San Jose State at the California Intercollegiate championships.
San Jose State is in first place in the team standings at 895 followed by Stanford, 911; SDSU, 912; Brigham Young, 942; and U.S. International, 944.
SDSU’s Wendy Koup is fourth at 224. USIU’s top performer is Yuri Moiedo who is 10th at 226.
