Goals of Schools, Needs of Teachers

Upon reading Carol Kiessig’s opinion on the Foothill teachers boycott in your Editorial section (May 6), I must point out that Kiessig must realize the difference between idealism and realism.
I do believe that teaching is a profession geared toward the service of the public, and, idealistically, teachers should choose the profession for the sole purpose of educating our youth. But, unfortunately, we live in a realistic world.
In the world today, our teachers must be able to make a living to support themselves and their families. I see nothing wrong with teachers asking for increases in their salary, health benefits, etc.
If the loss of education is the concern, then it should be clear that the ones to blame are not teachers but school administrations. The administrations are the ones who are withholding the education from our children, not the teachers.
