ANAHEIM : Nature Center Trails Due for Sprucing Up

At the eastern edge of the city lies a secluded hideaway that provides a glimpse of what Anaheim looked like before the arrival of housing developments and freeways.
Just past the Anaheim Hills Golf and Country Club, the Oak Canyon Nature Center offers five miles of hiking and walking trails, a stream and lush greenery. And the popular city-owned park is in for a small face-lift.
This month, the City Council approved spending $20,000 for a study that is likely to conclude that the trails in the 60-acre park are due for some improvements.
The park also includes exhibits of stuffed birds and animals, colonies of local insects and a collection of live snakes and toads.
On Sunday, the center will hold its ninth annual Heritage Day festival with square dancing, pony rides, butter churning and tortilla making. The festival will be from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
The center, 6700 E. Walnut Canyon Road, is open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., including weekends and most holidays. Admission is free, but park rules prohibit picnics and pets.
