Spain Closes Nuclear Plant Badly Damaged by Blaze

MADRID — in on Wednesday closed an 18-year-old nuclear power plant hit by a serious blaze last October, saying it would be too expensive to modernize.
Officials said a turbine explosion that caused the fire at the 500-megawatt Vandellos-1 plant, near the Mediterranean port of Tarragona, was the most serious nuclear accident in Spain. Repair costs were estimated at $317 million.
