SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA GOLF ASSN. FINALS : Estancia’s Maki Wins Title on First Hole of Sudden Death

TARZANA — Austin Maki of Estancia High School defeated Jason Gore of Newhall Hart on the first hole of sudden death to win the California Interscholastic Federation/Southern California Golf Assn. finals Monday at El Caballero Country Club.
Maki, who turned a three-shot lead into a one-stroke deficit over the final four holes of regulation play, drilled a 25-foot putt for birdie on the 18th hole to force the playoff. Maki birdied the 510-yard par-five first hole to win the boys’ individual title.
Maki had a 71-77--148. Hart shot 74-74--148.
Albert Oh of Sunny Hills finished fifth with a 77-76--153.
Estancia, the Southern Section champion, shot 396 in the team competition to finish two shots behind West Bakersfield, which won for the second consecutive season.
