A Los Angeles man was killed Monday and three other people received minor injuries during an early-morning accident that closed part of Interstate 5 for 1 1/2 hours near the San Clemente immigration checkpoint.
California Highway Patrol officers closed two northbound lanes of the freeway about 2 miles south of the checkpoint, said CHP dispatcher Karen Evans.
Ignacio de Anda Ruz, 32, was dead at the scene after the car he was driving apparently cut off another car and collided with it about 4:20 a.m., Evans said.
Ruz’s car then struck an abandoned car in the freeway median, she said.
The occupants of the second car, Ana Maria Torres Mendoza, 50, of Compton and Jesus Tomiao, 34, of Paramount, were taken to Samaritan Hospital in San Clemente, Evans said. An unidentified passenger in Ruz’s car was taken to Mission Community Hospital in San Clemente, Evans said.
