Supporters of Nelson Mandela will start celebrating his upcoming visit to Los Angeles almost a week early with a free, daylong block party in the Crenshaw District, visit organizers said Tuesday.
The party, which is open to the public, is scheduled for 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday in the 4300 block of Degnan Boulevard outside the Nelson Mandela Reception Committee office, said committee spokeswoman Darlene Donloe. The block will be closed to traffic for the day, she said.
In addition to speeches by politicians and appearances by celebrities, the party will feature live entertainment and the foods of Africa, the Caribbean and the African-America community, Donloe said. Information about the South African anti-apartheid leader’s June 29 schedule in Los Angeles also will be distributed.
Mandela’s 24-hour visit is part of a eight-city U.S. tour that is to begin today in New York.
