NEW YORK — More contemporary culture will be auctioned off by Sotheby’s in New York on Saturday when Buddy Holly’s personal effects go on the block. They’re being sold to settle a dispute between Holly’s wife, Maria Elena, and the rest of his family.
The items on sale include Holly’s Fender guitar, which has been appraised at about $65,000, a pair of red suede shoes, a notebook with handwritten song lyrics, a pair of his signature black glasses and an 8-millimeter film of the Hollys visiting his hometown, Lubbock, Tex., at Christmas.
“I’d rather have not done this, but what has to be done has to be done,” Mrs. Holly said of the sale.
