Chapman’s Hokuf Signs With Athletics

Ken Hokuf, a pitcher from Chapman College, signed a minor league contract with the Oakland Athletics as a free agent, he said Wednesday.
Hokuf, a senior right-hander who was 4-2 with one save for Chapman this season, wasn’t taken in baseball’s free agent amateur draft two weeks ago. He had hoped to be picked up at a tryout camp this summer, but instead got a call from the A’s Tuesday.
“They wanted to see me throw,” Hokuf said. “So I went down to school (Chapman) and did. Then they offered me a contract.”
Hokuf, who pitched at Cal State Fullerton in 1989 and at Golden West in ’87 and ‘88, will report to Scottsdale in the Arizona League today.
John Ingram, a pitcher who has signed a letter of intend to play at Cal State Fullerton, instead signed with the Philadelphia Phillies.
Ingram, a sophomore left-hander, helped Los Angeles Harbor to the state baseball title this season. He was 8-0 and pitched a complete game as Harbor defeated Chabot, 5-2, in the championship game May 29 at UC Irvine.
