OFF THE FIELD : Italian Bus Crash Kills British Soccer Fan; 22 Others Injured

ROME — Tragedy struck the World Cup today when one English fan died and 22 were injured in a bus accident.

Two buses collided near Cagliari on the island of Sardinia. One of the buses was bound for England’s game against Egypt at Cagliari.

“We think all of these (dead and injured) are British,” British Embassy spokeswoman Kay Coombs said.

Coombs said the dead man was aboard the English fans’ bus, but was not carrying any identification. She said half the injuries were believed to be serious.
