NATION IN BRIEF : VIRGINIA : Captain Testifies on Ship Collision

A ship captain involved in a collision that on Sunday spilled 30,000 gallons of fuel oil into the environmentally sensitive Chesapeake Bay and its tributaries blamed the accident on the wayward course of the other vessel. Capt. John (Jack) Jones, who was piloting the Neptune Jade, told Coast Guard investigators in Norfolk, Va., that his 800-foot container ship would have split the 635-foot Columbus America if he had not veered to the left. The Coast Guard said soon after the accident that the Columbus America appeared to be in the incoming channel lane.
