With the start of the 1991 U.S. Olympic Festival in Los Angeles less than a year away, organizers are still formulating plans and raising money. Wednesday, the financial picture brightened considerably with the announcement of five additional corporate sponsors.
Elizabeth Primrose-Smith, president of the ’91 festival, said corporate sponsors would be expected to account for $8 million to $9 million of the festival’s $13-million budget. Ticket sales are projected to make up the $4-million remainder.
The Olympic Festival is a multisport competition sponsored by the U.S. Olympic Committee and held in every non-Olympic year. The L.A. dates are next July 12-21 at sites throughout the Southland.
Primrose-Smith said tickets would be available in mid-February. She said the festival would need more than 9,000 volunteers, plus another 9,000 for the event’s torch run.
