Shoot the Piano Player and Forbidden Games
Two great French films from different eras. “Piano Player” is Francois Truffaut’s effervescent 1962 adaptation of a David Goodis American crime thriller, with Charles Aznavour (above with Nicole Berger) as the concert pianist turned lower-depths fugitive, has an early-’60s spirit: experimental, hip, alive to pain and humor. “Games,” Rene Clement’s 1952 Venice Grand Prize winner starring the luminous young Brigitte Fossey, is a classically made, devastating portrayal of childhood in wartime.
