Justice Brennan, Judge Souter and Supreme Court

I am astounded by the audacity of Republican politicians, Atty. Gen. Dick Thornburg, and members of the Senate Judiciary Committee who are trying to imply that it is somehow” inappropriate” for the Senate and the American people to even inquire about the nature of Souter’s positions on the most important issues of our time! As a taxpayer, a voter, and a citizen, I damn well have the right to know if Souter plans to actively support an agenda centered on the elimination of civil rights legislation, thoughtless expansion of big-business interests, the denial of women the legal authority over their bodies, and other forms of right-wing oppression made fashionable by Ronald Reagan!
Of course Souter has a right to privacy, and if he weren’t up for confirmation for such a crucial position from which he could dramatically affect the lives of hundreds of millions of Americans over the course of the next three or four decades then he would have no obligation to reveal where he stands on important issues.
