Girl Badly Injured in Fall on Island

An 8-year-old Cerritos girl fell while camping with her family on one of the Channel Islands on Friday afternoon and was flown by helicopter to an Oxnard hospital by the U.S. Coast Guard, authorities said.
Maryann Duarte suffered severe head injuries and cuts to her left arm and leg. She was in stable but serious condition at St. John’s Regional Medical Center in Oxnard on Friday night, said a spokeswoman for the hospital.
The National Park Service administered first aid until the Coast Guard Air Station in Los Angeles took her from Anacapa Island by helicopter about 2 p.m., Petty Officer Jeff Gunn said.
