IBM has donated $200,000 worth of computer equipment for a 20-station computer lab to be used by four South County school districts and educational programs.
The Capistrano and Laguna Beach Unified School districts, the Laguna-Capistrano Regional Occupation Program and the Mission Viejo campus of Cal State Fullerton will share the new computer facility. The lab is at the Regional Occupation Program offices at 31522 El Camino Real in San Juan Capistrano.
The grant, a part of a joint program of IBM and the state Department of Education, is aimed at encouraging computer use in classrooms and developing IBM products for schools. Any software programs developed as a result of the project will be available free to all public schools, according to a letter from IBM and state officials.
The Capistrano Unified School District competed with hundreds of other school districts for the funds, according to a district staff report.
