Bring on Van Cliburn: Piano virtuoso Van Cliburn will give his first full-length solo recital in more than a decade this October in Kilgore, Tex., his boyhood home. Proceeds from the recital will benefit the Harvey Lavan and Rildia Bee O’Bryan Cliburn Scholarship, named for Cliburn’s parents, at Kilgore Junior College. Cliburn, 56, revived his performing career at the White House in December, 1987, and has played selections from his solo repertoire at private fund-raising events and as encores for his orchestral appearances, but the Kilgore event will be his first complete solo recital since 1978. Cliburn also will perform this season with the Lincoln, Neb., Symphony on Sept. 21.
