Environmentalists Set Aside Walden Pond Woods: The Trust for Public Land announced that it would hold as an interim landowner 50 acres of prime land in the heart of Walden Woods, Mass. The area, known as Bear Garden Hill in Henry David Thoreau’s writings, was slated for a condominium development. Singer Don Henley, former Sen. Paul E. Tsongas (D-Mass.) and Michael Kennedy, head of the public-interest Citizen’s Energy Corp., formed the Walden Wood Project. The trust will hold the land until the project can raise the full purchase price.
