ORANGE : Treasurer’s Selection Is Placed on Ballot

Voters will decide in November whether to change the position of city treasurer from an elective office to an appointive one. The ballot measure was unanimously approved last week by the City Council.
The city treasurer is now elected by voters and serves a four-year term. Under the new resolution, the treasurer would be appointed by the City Council for an indefinite period, City Clerk Marilyn J. Jensen said.
In 1986, voters rejected a similar resolution, Jensen said, partly because people believe that electing a treasurer provides more “checks and balances” at City Hall.
The present city treasurer, Lorraine Schade, will retire from office Oct. 1. The City Council will appoint a replacement to finish Schade’s term, which expires in 1992.
