WORLD IN BRIEF : YUGOSLAVIA : Army Units Move in Croatia Unrest

Federal army units moved into the Croatian town of Knin amid rising tension over plans to ban a referendum on Serb autonomy in the republic. Croatian authorities earlier vowed to prevent the unofficial referendum, saying it was aimed at undermining democratic reforms in Croatia. Leaders of the 400,000-strong Serb minority in western Croatia had been scheduled to start a two-week referendum Sunday in which Serbs were to choose whether they want some degree of self-government within Croatia. Serbia and Croatia have been traditional rivals since they were united within Yugoslavia in 1918.
