PITTSBURGH — The steel beverage can recycling rate shot up more than 39% for the first half of 1990 to total more than 700 million cans, the Steel Can Recycling Institute of Pittsburgh reported today.
The institution said the recycling rate for the first six months of the year was 30.1%, up 39.3% over the 1989 beverage can recycling rate.
“While it is unusual to announce a recycling rate for the first half of a year, we’re proud of this tremendous progress,” said Kurt Smalberg, president of the institute. “As more and more beverage producers convert to steel, we’re moving rapidly to develop the necessary beverage can recycling infrastructure in the new market areas.”
Steel beverage cans are constructed with a steel body and an aluminum lid and often are referred to as bimetal cans. The entire can is directly recyclable by steel mills.
