Walnut : Solid Waste Curbs Ordered

Concerns are mounting that the city will be hard-pressed to meet the requirements of a state law demanding a 25% reduction of solid waste sent to landfills by July 1, 1995.
“It’s an enormous task,” said Councilman Drexel Smith, Walnut’s representative on the board of the County Sanitation Districts of Los Angeles County. “This is going to be a major, major problem.”
City officials report an 8% to 12% reduction since 1988 through curbside recycling of aluminum and metal cans, newspaper and glass. In addition, the City Council voted last week to expand the recycling program to include plastic soft drink, water and food containers starting Nov. 1.
The city also will consider expanding its staff to comply with the law, which provides for a penalty of up to $10,000 per day for violations.
