PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. — Thomas Muster, the sixth-seeded player in the U.S. Open, and Christian Saceanu were fined and suspended Sunday by the Assn. of Tennis Professionals Tour for violations of the tour code of conduct.
Muster was fined $20,000 and suspended for 10 weeks, from Sept. 10-Nov. 18. The suspension begins after the U.S. Open, unless he appeals. Before his first-round singles match at the Czechoslovakian Open, he informed officials of his intention, because of injury, to play only one game before retiring. Muster played five points, lost the first game and retired.
Saceanu was fined $15,000 and suspended for 10 weeks after withdrawing from the tournament, claiming a back injury, and playing the next day in Germany.
If an appeal fails, the suspension would begin on the Monday following that announcement.
