Fast Serve: Andre Agassi, the world’s fourth-ranked tennis player known for his outlandish court outfits, may again raise eyebrows at the U.S. Open starting today in New York. His new shirt will have a bold graphic design reflecting one of Agassi’s loves, fast cars. Agassi has turned heads at earlier matches wearing black-and-hot-lava denim shorts. Officials at the French Open this year reportedly threatened to impose a dress code. Agassi said of his own togs: “Wow.”
Willful Defense: Attorney Theodore Kurz said in New York late last week his law firm will “vigorously” defend the will of Greta Garbo as valid, despite a court challenge Aug. 20 by Sven Fredriksson, reportedly the illegitimate son of Garbo’s older brother. Kurz said the deadline is past to contest the will and that Fredriksson will have difficulty proving both that he is related to the late actress and that she was mentally incompetent or was unduly influenced when she signed the document in 1984. Garbo died in April.
Royal Fix-Up, 1: British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher returned from her vacation with a new look--large-framed colored glasses. Thatcher wore them as she condemned Iraqi President Saddam Hussein at a press conference. A spokesman for the prime minister said her eyesight has not worsened but she just wanted a change of style from the glasses she has worn since 1983.
Royal Fix-Up, 2: Prince Charles is scheduled for a second operation this week to repair the arm bone broken in a fall from a horse. “The problem has been that the bottom fracture, just above the (right) elbow joint, has been slow to heal,” said surgeon John Hollingdale. A metal plate will be screwed onto the bone to support the arm while bone grafts from a hip joint take.
