American Stores Co.: The Salt Lake City-based supermarket and drugstore chain said second-quarter earnings jumped 52% to $37.5 million. Revenue was up 3.8% to $5.6 billion. The company said lower interest payments and the fact that no preferred-stock dividends were paid during the quarter boosted earnings results.
