Sun Freezes Hiring and Tightens Spending: Mountain View, Calif.-based Sun Microsystems, a leading maker of computer workstations, has tightened spending because of concern about the nation’s economy, according to a report in the New York Times. The newspaper cited an internal memo from Sun’s chief executive, Scott McNealy, saying the company immediately would halt hiring, cut the use of contractors and consultants, limit travel and reduce entertainment expenses. Sun’s workstations are used by scientists, engineers and financial specialists.
