UCSD Beats PLNC in Meeting of Ranked Volleyball Teams

Two highly regarded local women’s volleyball teams met in La Jolla Wednesday night, and UC San Diego defeated Point Loma Nazarene, 15-7, 15-9, 14-16, 15-11.
UCSD, ranked No. 1 in NCAA Division III, was led by Elizabeth Tan (13 kills) and Vikki Van Duyne (11). The Tritons improved to 22-6.
PLNC, ranked 15th in the NAIA, got 15 kills from Roberta Simpson and 13 from Debbie Simpson but fell to 15-6.
MEN’S SOCCER
UC San Diego scored three second-half goals for a come-from-behind, 3-1 nonconference victory over Cal Poly Pomona in La Jolla.
The Tritons, ranked sixth in NCAA Division III, trailed, 1-0, at halftime despite outshooting the Broncos (4-7-2), 20-2, in the first half. Mike Gerhardt, Jarret Stevenson and Sean West had the goals for UCSD (11-2-1).
Point Loma Nazarene’s Abdessamad Yahi scored four minutes into overtime to give the Crusaders a 2-1 victory over Biola (7-4-1) in a Golden State Athletic Conference match. Steve Cokkinis had an unassisted goal for PLNC (5-4-1) in the first half.
Utah’s Westminster College defeated U.S. International, 4-0, in a nonconference match. USIU (3-8-1) was shut out for the second time. Westminster improved to 13-1.
WOMEN’S SOCCER
Cal Poly Pomona, an NCAA Division II team, defeated UC San Diego, 4-1. It was the most goals the Tritons have allowed since Oct. 18, 1987, in a 4-0 loss to Cal, a span of 61 matches.
Sally Weigand scored the only goal for UCSD (8-2-1). Shannon Payne had two goals and two assists for the Broncos (6-6).
WATER POLO
Sean Kinghorn entered in the fourth quarter and scored two goals to spark UC San Diego over Cal State Los Angeles, 9-8, in La Jolla. Daniel Keller had three goals and Kevin Vance two for the Tritons (4-17). CSLA fell to 9-9.
CAR RACING
Al Unser Jr. has signed to drive in the Camel Grand Prix of Greater San Diego Nov. 9-11 at the Del Mar Fairgrounds. Unser, the 1990 CART Indy-car champion, joins GTP car stars Geoff Brabham, Chip Robinson, Price Cobb Juan Fangio II and Davy Jones in the race around the 1.62-mile Del Mar course.
