San Diego police arrested Ursula Effend, 26, on suspicion of murder in connection with the death of an infant boy found Friday afternoon in a trash bin in a Southeast San Diego alley.
The San Diego woman was arrested early Saturday morning and taken to Mercy Hospital, where she was held under police guard, a police spokesman said. Hospital spokeswoman Laura Avallone said Effend was discharged into the custody of the county Sheriff’s Department on Saturday afternoon after being treated for the aftereffects of childbirth.
The baby, apparently a newborn, was discovered by a passerby in the trash receptacle in an alley in the 4000 block of 44th Street.
An autopsy will be performed on the infant, police said.
