SOUTHLAND ROUNDUP : Northridge Backfield Leads Win

Tailback Albert Fann rushed for 136 yards and three touchdowns and fullback Anthony Nicholson also gained 136 yards Saturday to lead Cal State Northridge to a 34-24 victory over Southern Utah in a Western Football Conference game at Cedar City, Utah.
Fann, a senior, had 38 carries and scored on two one-yard runs and a four-yard run.
Nicholson, a junior, had 19 carries.
Northridge, 5-1 overall and 2-0 in the conference, moved into first place in the conference, half a game ahead of Southern Utah (4-3, 2-1) and a game ahead of Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, a 20-17 loser to Cal State Sacramento.
The Matadors, ranked 15th in Division II, were outgained, 440 total yards to 385, but forced six turnovers.
Included was an interception and 33-yard return for a touchdown by nose tackle Alo Sila with just over 12 minutes left that put the Matadors in the lead to stay, 24-17.
Abo Velasco kicked field goals of 34 and 50 yards for Northridge.
Southern Utah scored on a 19-yard run by Steve Hutchings, a two-yard run by Scott Firestone, a 33-yard pass play from Brad Matthews to Dan Silcox and a 28-yard field goal by Rick Cadwallader.
La Verne 28, Whittier 14--Chris Nance rushed for 116 yards in 17 carries and scored a touchdown as the Leopards (1-4, 1-3) defeated the Poets (0-5, 0-4) in a Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game at Whittier.
Cal Lutheran 14, Claremont-Mudd 7--Quarterback Cassidy O’Sullivan and receiver Tom Leogrande connected on a 19-yard touchdown pass play with 1:12 left to give the Kingsmen (1-5) the victory over the Stags (1-4) in a nonconference game at Claremont.
Cal Lutheran freshman Jay Weber gained 126 yards in 32 carries.
