NEW ORLEANS — A series of chain-reaction accidents involving more than 20 cars, including one carrying ammunition, occurred today on a smoky, fog-shrouded highway. At least a dozen people were injured, police said.
Bullets exploded when the car carrying ammunition caught fire, state police said.
No one was injured by the bullets, but emergency workers said that at least 12 to 15 people hurt in the chain-reaction crash shortly before 8 a.m. were taken to a hospital near New Orleans.
Cars, pickups and larger trucks littered a mile-long stretch of the Lafitte-Larose Highway about five miles south of New Orleans.
The fog was so thick that state police cars crept toward the scene with two troopers walking in front to guide them.
