FTC Challenges Publishing-Printing Merger: The Federal Trade Commission challenged R. R. Donnelley & Son Co.’s acquisition of a smaller publishing-printing partnership, saying that it could substantially lessen competition in the high-volume publication field. Chicago-based Donnelley, which bought MeredithBurda Cos. for $570 million on Sept. 4, said it will fight the FTC. Donnelly specializes in high-volume gravure printing--the kind used for magazines, newspaper inserts and catalogues. Magazine publisher Meredith Corp., based in Des Moines, is a partner in printing operations with Germany’s Burda family.
