Five U.S. Airlines Win Route Authorization: The five carriers have been authorized to open passenger and cargo service to Tokyo and other cities in Japan, the Department of Transportation announced. United Air Lines, Delta Air Lines and American Airlines were authorized to serve Tokyo. Delta, America West Airlines and Hawaiian Airlines were authorized to serve Nagoya and Fukuoka. The route awards were granted under a November, 1989, agreement that laid the foundation for a major expansion of air service between the United States and Japan.
