An 18-year-old man was in serious condition today with a face wound suffered in a gang gun battle in a Los Angeles hospital stairwell, officials said.
The wounded man, whose name was not released, was shot in the cheek in the clash about 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, said Adelaida De La Cerda, a spokeswoman for County-USC Medical Center in Boyle Heights.
De La Cerda said 18 suspected gang members were in the corridor of the 11th floor during visiting hours. A clash erupted, and the man was shot in the stairwell.
No patients or staff were hurt in the shooting, she said.
Nine hospital police officers on duty captured the 18 gang members, including the suspected gunman, and turned them over to Los Angeles police.
