Belmont High spotted Eagle Rock a 7-0 lead but came back to score a 16-7 victory over the Eagles in a City Section Northern Conference game at Eagle Rock Friday.
The key play for Belmont came with one minute remaining in the second quarter when halfback Edgar Moreno completed a 50-yard option pass to David Panameno, which set up John Evans’ four-yard touchdown run.
“We practice that play every day, but this is the first time we’ve used it,” Belmont Coach Rob Levy said after his team improved to 2-1 in conference play and 4-1 overall. “We had to try it, nothing else was working.”
Belmont took a 10-7 lead after Juan Ramos kicked a 27-yard field goal three minutes into the third quarter and, eight minutes later, the Centenials mounted 10-play, 66-yard scoring drive. The touchdown came on a 21-yard pass from Conteraras to Moreno.
Belmont’s defense dominated the second half, allowing Eagle Rock only 10 yards in net offense, Eagle quarterback Eddy Espinoza was sacked five times for 47 yards in losses.
