Women in Men’s Locker Rooms

In response to “What Women Want: Equal Access for Interviews, Not Bad Jokes” (by Melissa Ludtke, Opinion, Oct. 14) and “Locker Room Air Freshener: Common Sense” (by Charles Krauthammer, Commentary, Oct. 15):
I strongly agree with Ludtke that the whole issue of women reporters in locker rooms is one of professional access.
Women have made great strides in gaining equality; however, there are still many barriers to overcome. It is the chauvinistic reasoning of people like Krauthammer that has historically oppressed women and perpetuated a state of inequality. For example, he maintains that merely “letting” women have access to their own U.S. Open Tennis title is actually sexual discrimination. In actuality, men generally have a genetic physical advantage over women, therefore necessitating separate tournaments. Women’s sports, however, should not be judged as better or worse than men’s, but merely as different.
