Coffey’s New Deal: 5 Years, $6 Million

PITTSBURGH — The Pittsburgh Penguins avoided a scheduled Wednesday night arbitration hearing by reaching agreement with All-Star defenseman Paul Coffey on a reported five-year, $6-million contract.
The Penguins would not confirm the terms of the contract.
A seven-time All-Star, the 29-year-old Coffey played on three Stanley Cup championship teams in Edmonton before being traded to Pittsburgh early in the 1987-88 season. He won the Norris Trophy as the NHL’s best defenseman in 1984-85 and 1985-86.
