NO SHOW: Republicans William Howard Taft and Herbert Hoover also made campaign visits, as did Warren G. Harding, a member of the Newport Yacht Club whose sister lived in Santa Ana. . . . Harding was a no-show for a scheduled Aug. 6, 1923, appearance and parade. He had a good excuse, though. He had been dead for four days, reportedly after eating tainted crabs legs and getting a coded message from Washington that the Teapot Dome scandal was about to break.
