NEWPORT BEACH — When it opened in October of 1975, “The Rocky Horror Picture Show” was met with about as much enthusiasm as Ozzy Osbourne at a church revival. But over the years, its growth in popularity has made it the granddaddy of midnight movies, a standard-bearer among cult films.
In acknowledgment of this triumph and to celebrate 12 years locally of midnight rendezvous with Frank-n-Furter, Riff Raff and the rest of the “Rocky” gang, Midnight Insanity, a local troupe of amateur actors and “Rocky” enthusiasts, is presenting special anniversary and Halloween screenings of the movie tonight and Wednesday at the Balboa Landmark Theatre, 709 E. Balboa Blvd.
There’ll be birthday cake tonight and balloons and costume contests both nights. Prizes include a CD soundtrack from the film, posters and buttons, and tapes of “Rocky” radio spots, and renditions of “Rocky” songs from a variety of live theater productions.
Tonight’s party starts at 11:30, with the screening itself scheduled for 12:45. Wednesday’s times are 11 and 11:45. Admission each night is $6. Information: (714) 675-3570.
