Various Artists, “Pump Up the Volume,” soundtrack, MCA. If the freedom-o’-youthful-speech movie “Pump Up the Volume” shoots itself in the foot by indulging in the most obvious kind of anti-adult cliches--kind of like John Hughes trying to do a Lenny Bruce thing--the album at least beats a Hughes soundtrack in getting right what your average brainy troubled teen anarchist would pick to defy authority with. The usual college suspects bring the noise, but the grown-up cover choices: Concrete Blonde tackling Leonard Cohen’s “Everybody Knows” and the Cowboy Junkies sliding through Robert Johnson’s “Me and the Devil Blues.”
