High Five America, beginning its second season as a club team, lost, 105-100, to USC at Mt. Carmel High School. High Five America, based in Rancho Bernardo and coached by former Athletes in Action Coach Rle Nichols, led by as many as 17 in the first half but saw the lead shrink to 10 by halftime.
The game is the first of a series of 17 games in 19 days by the team. Troy Lewis, a two-time all-Big Ten at Purdue, scored 25 for High Five America.
WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL
San Diego State defeated visiting Wyoming, 15-10, 15-7, 15-10, in a Western Athletic Conference match at Peterson Gym. SDSU (18-9, 3-3) was led by Gracie Schutt, who had 18 kills. Shannon Mathew had 13 kills and Angela Martin 12. Wyoming is 16-6, 3-3.
Angie Rais had 26 kills and Nikki Wallace added 23 to lead the University of San Diego to an 11-15, 15-12, 15-6, 12-15, 15-9 Western Coast Conference victory over San Francisco. Torril Purvis added 15 kills. USD is 12-13, 4-5; USF is 8-15, 2-8.
BASEBALL
The Padres announced that Steve Lubratich has been rehired to manage the Class-AA Wichita Wranglers, who had a 67-68 record last year and finished one game behind El Paso for the first-half league championship.
Wranglers pitching coach Jon Matlack was named pitching coach of the Padres’ Class-AAA team at Las Vegas.
MEN’S SOCCER
Steve Cokkinis, a senior from Point Loma Nazarene College, was named to the NAIA District 3 first team and PLNC Coach Mike Farrand was named conference coach of the year. Sophomore Steve Beck was a second-team selection.
Biola’s Jake Segraves, from San Diego, also made the first team.
