EPA Decrees Stricter Storm Sewer Rules

WASHINGTON — The Environmental Protection Agency said Monday that large cities and heavily populated suburban counties must develop programs to reduce contamination of water that flows through storm sewers.
The EPA said about 100,000 industrial facilities also must obtain federal permits for discharging water into public sewer systems.
The new EPA rules are required by a 1987 law. Storm water often contains a wide range of pollutants, including toxic pesticides from lawns and oil or grease from roads and parking lots. The runoff eventually reaches public waterways.
