Maurice Hexter; Fund-Raiser for Jewish Causes

Maurice Hexter, 99, a major fund-raiser for Jewish causes in British-mandate Palestine and across the United States. Hexter joined the the Federation of Jewish Philanthropies of New York in 1938 on his return from Palestine, and by 1967, as executive vice president, distributed nearly $500 million to its health and welfare agencies. In 1929, he moved to Jerusalem to administer the Palestine Emergency Fund, which collected millions of dollars worldwide to rebuild homes wrecked by rioting between Arabs and Jews. He also was a former executive director of the Milwaukee Federation of Jewish Charities. In New York on Oct. 28.
