Kendall Injured in Crash During Practice

DEL MAR — Chuck Kendall, the father of Trans-Am champion Tommy Kendall, was hospitalized Friday with a possible bruised heart after being involved in a three-car crash during practice for Sunday’s Camel Grand Prix of Southern California.
Kendall, 55, from La Canada and driving a Ford Mustang, tangled with the Mazda RX-7 of 1989 GTO champion Pete Halsmer and a Mazda MX-6 driven by Don Swanson. There was no indication how the accident began.
Halsmer and Swanson, both with bumps and bruises, were examined and released at Scripps-La Jolla Hospital. Kendall was expected to be held overnight for observation.
Halsmer is expected to start his repaired car from the back of the GTO field in today’s one-hour Chevron IMSA GT race. Swanson’s car was damaged beyond repair.
