SHORT TAKES : ‘Into the Woods’ Wins Award

LONDON — Stephen Sondheim’s “Into the Woods” was named the best musical of the 1989-90 London theater season at the annual Evening Standard Drama Awards on Tuesday.

“Shadowlands,” a play by William Nicholson based on the life of writer C. S. Lewis, won the best drama award. It opened on Broadway two days earlier to mixed-to-negative reviews. Its London run finished in September, and its future in New York is in doubt.

The best-actress award went to Josette Simon. The British actress won praise in June for being the first black woman to play the Marilyn Monroe part, Maggie, in Arthur Miller’s partly autobiographical play, “After the Fall.”

Richard Harris was named best actor for his performance in the title role of Luigi Pirandello’s “Henry IV.” The revival, which was not a commercial success, has been mentioned for Broadway next year.
