NATION IN BRIEF : TEXAS : Reputed Serial Killer Wins Execution Stay

Alleged serial killer Henry Lee Lucas, scheduled to die Monday for the slaying of a woman in 1979, won a stay from the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals. The appeals court in Austin said it would consider a claim by Lucas’ attorneys that the trial jury should have been able to consider mitigating circumstances before sentencing him to death, said Assistant Texas Atty. Gen. Bob Walt. Lucas, 54, had once claimed to have killed nearly 600 people in 26 states, but he recanted his confessions to all the slayings but one--that of his mother.
