CORVALLIS, Ore. — Jerry Pettibone has told his athletic director at Northern Illinois that he’s taking the head football coaching job at Oregon State University.
Pettibone met with Oregon State officials in Corvallis Tuesday and visited the university’s athletic facilities.
An Oregon State official said a deal on the coaching job had been struck and the Pacific 10 Conference school planned to announce it this afternoon.
Northern Illinois Athletic Director Gerald O’Dell said Pettibone telephoned him late Tuesday with his decision.
Dee Andros, former Oregon State football coach and athletic director, said he was impressed after a Tuesday lunch meeting with Pettibone.
“I said before there was somebody out there who could turn this thing around and I think Jerry could be that person,” Andros said.
Pettibone, 51, was considered one of the best recruiters in the country during his tenure as an assistant coach in some of college football’s most successful programs.
