THE SIDELINES : Turner Leads in Johnny Walker

MELBOURNE, Australia — New Zealand’s Greg Turner moved into a one-stroke lead at the halfway mark of the Johnnie Walker Classic today by firing a 3-under-par 69 in the second round. He had a 137 for 36 holes.
Former U.S. Amateur champion Chris Patton and Simon Owen of New Zealand, who shared the first-round lead at 67, both fell well back after dismal rounds today. Patton had a 79 and Owen a 75 in windy and rainy conditions.
Gabriel Hjertstedt, a 19-year-old Swede, matched Turner’s 68 and moved into second place at 138.
Australian Rodger Davis and American Raymond Floyd were tied for third at 139 after rounds of 69.
PGA Tour money-leader Greg Norman dropped five shots in the first four holes but rallied to finish with a 73 for a 144 total. British Open and Masters champion Nick Faldo had a 74 for a 146 total.
