WINTER SPORTS : Stock Gets Downhill Win

Leonhard Stock, a surprise winner of the downhill at the Lake Placid Olympics nearly 11 years ago, scored an upset Saturday at Val D’Isere, France, winning the opening World Cup downhill race.
The 32-year-old Austrian won the 2.07-mile race in 1 minute 57.43 seconds despite starting 27th. Stock edged Franz Heinzer of Switzerland by .13 second.
Katrin Gutensohn of Germany held off Petra Kronberger of Austria to win the season’s first women’s World Cup downhill race at Altenmarkt, Austria.
Andreas Felder of Austria held off Germany’s Dieter Thoma to win the 90-meter World Cup ski-jumping event at Thunder Bay, Canada.
