Pope Canonizes Canadian Woman

VATICAN CITY — A Canadian woman who devoted her life to the poor and suffering was canonized Sunday as Canada’s first native-born saint in a solemn ceremony at St. Peter’s Basilica.
Pilgrims and clergy braved poor weather to pack St. Peter’s Square for the ceremony at which Pope John Paul II canonized Mother Marguerite d’Youville, who died at the age of 70 in 1771.
D’Youville, who founded the Sisters of Charity of Montreal, the “Grey Nuns,” dedicated her life to the poor after experiencing hardship and poverty herself.
