P.M. BRIEFING : Gorbachev Asks U.S. Investment

NEW YORK — Soviet President Mikhail S. Gorbachev urged U.S. business to invest in the Soviet Union’s rapidly evolving economy, even opening the door to the defense industry.
“You remember the expression ‘rapid deployment forces’--this is what business should do. They should use the methods of rapid deployment (of investment),” the Soviet leader said in an interview with Fortune magazine that appears in the Dec. 31 issue.
He spoke of the enormous economic changes the Soviet Union is grappling with and asked for U.S. business to help with the transformation. He said the Soviet Union is open to investment in virtually all its industries. “Even in defense?” the editors asked. “Yes,” Gorbachev replied.
